Kaili and Cody | Maternity Session on the Rio Grande in Las Cruces, New Mexico

Kaili is a wedding planner! Her business, Linen & Charm, is based in Las Cruces, New Mexico (helloooo, all my LC Brides!). Obviously, right now she’s a little preoccupied with the sweet baby boy about to enter her life, but just sayin’…for future reference. 😉

Kaili got my name and information through a mutual photographer friend–as she was nearing the end of her pregnancy, she really wanted maternity portraits to document this special time! Also, she and Cody were celebrating their third anniversary, and that definitely warranted a session, as well.

We met down by the Rio Grande in Las Cruces, on what I thought was going to be a nice, temperate August evening–not too hot, with some cloud cover that I’d hoped would give us a nice glowy sunset. Instead, the sky darkened up real quick, and by the time we started shooting, I could see lightning in the distance and what looked like a dust storm headed our way. These two were such troopers! We worked quickly to roll though as many setups as possible before the wind got out of control…and honestly, that was only a matter of minutes! I’ve shot in plenty of wind, but when the dust storm hit, we ducked for cover, cutting our session time in half and planning to reschedule, if needed. (In the end, though, it wasn’t necessary!).

We thought that was the end for the evening, but as we rushed back out towards the parking area, I came across an alcove of trees and reeds that was protected from the majority of the dust and dirt we’d been getting pelted with. Despite the awful weather, and with some quick thinking, I found a beautiful angle that turned out to be my favorite composition of the night (you can check it out at the bottom of the post!). Hopefully, the end result just looks like a little ‘Beyonce wind’, and not the craaazy storm we were actually dealing with!

Kaili and Cody, I know you’ll be meeting this little guy shortly, so I just wanted to give a little shout out! I’m excited for you to enter this new phase of life–you’ll soon wonder how such a tiny little person can fill such a huge place in your heart. Congratulations! Enjoy the last few days of pre-baby life, and then soak up every little minute once he gets here.

Hugs,

Erin 🙂
